Hsinchu Guanxin Road East-Side Sidewalk Improvement Project Begins; Mayor Kao Advances Pedestrian-Friendly Infrastructure
To improve pedestrian safety and walking quality in the Guanpu residential area, the Hsinchu City Government held a groundbreaking ceremony today for the “East-Side Sidewalk Improvement Project on Guanxin Road (from Guangfu Road Section 1 to Guanxin 2nd Street)”. Mayor Kao Hung-An announced the official launch of the improvement project. She said the project will comprehensively address existing problems such as damaged sidewalk pavement, raised tree roots, and insufficient barrier-free access, creating a safer, more comfortable, and more people-centered walking environment. The total project budget is approximately NT$6 million, with a construction period of 40 working days. The project is expected to be completed on July 20, 2026.
Mayor Kao said the area around Guanxin Road is densely residential and has a mature commercial district. On weekdays, it sees frequent pedestrian traffic and serves as an important daily route for many families, students, and commuters. In recent years, the continued growth of street tree roots has caused sections of the sidewalk pavement to lift, tiles to break, and surfaces to become uneven. This has not only affected walking comfort, but also increased the risk of falls for seniors, children, and people with limited mobility. After receiving repeated feedback from local residents, the City Government immediately arranged an on-site inspection by the City Government Team and a professional consulting firm. The overall plan will improve 225 meters of sidewalk, covering an area of 1,100 square meters. Parking spaces, pedestrian crossings, and barrier-free routes will also be redesigned and reorganized as part of the project. Mayor Kao said the city hopes to complete the work before the end of the summer vacation, gradually building a more complete people-centered transportation environment.
